So where do I start with the mighty Betraeus? The fact that I got there late due to crappy public transport was devastating enough, but I was still looking forward to watching the majority of the set.
There were only 2 bands on in Escobar that night, Betraeus were headlining with Release The Kracken kicking the night off. They were ok, don’t get me wrong, but just not my cup of tea.
My mother always said, if you don’t have anything nice to say…
So moving swiftly on to the band I was there to really see. Now with Betraeus playing Bloodstock in 2010, and with all the hype and buzz about them, I was gutted to only see around 20 hardcore fans braving the cold and the elements to get there. Still, not to be put off the band came on stage and didn’t let the spartan crowd out them off and put on an amazing show.
What a voice, Chris Sykes sounds like he chews gravel for fun. The guitar playing was awesome enough, but with this front man, well, you kinda get the double whammy and know that this is a band just oozing ability. I can’t take anything away from Eddie Johnson either, his riffs and style of playing are truly epic and it’s all backed up by a rock solid rhythm section of Benjamin Edwards on Bass and Paddy Monaghan on Drums
If you are a fan of these guys, you missed out. Big time.
So it begs the question, why aren’t Betraeus bigger? I mean, they seem to have everything and want for nothing. Their debut EP, ‘Toward The Sun’ is just awesome (2 studio tracks on it, which are to die for, and 2 live tracks) and they’ve played a major festival to some rave reviews.
These boys are set to explode. Make sure you catch them when they come to a town near you in 2012.
