Godsized Live at Eddie's, Birmingham 16/07/2010

For all of the utter shite polluting the charts and airwaves of this nation, every so often bands come along that restore your faith in music. Bands who don't have everything handed to them on a plate by entering a TV freak-show, but who devote their lives to an endless cycle of writing, rehearsing and gigging. Always looking to develop and always giving it 100%.

I last caught up with Godsized when they played this year's Download festival. Even at the ungodly hour of 11am they rocked the tent, and about 4000 of us roared our approval. When I spoke to guitarist Neil after the gig he was obviously excited about what the band had achieved.

Fast forward a few weeks and Godsized announced their latest show in a never ending UK tour, at Eddie's rock bar in Birmingham. It is something of a testament to how good this band were at Download that people came from as far afield as London, Nottingham and Sheffield to savour the Godsized live experience.

Unfortunately something had gone awry with the promotion of the gig, and there was a fairly sparse crowd in the venue. Speaking to Neil after the gig he explained that unfortunately this is not unusual, and that they were never sure what to expect when they got to a new venue. Sometimes there would be hundreds of fans there and other times, like tonight, there would be somewhat less than that.

So...... were they any good ?

Well, as they ripped into the set opener, Walking Away, it was almost immediately clear that this band IS something special. Their brand of heavy as fuck classic rock may not be in fashion at the moment (if it ever was) but no one does it better. They played a selection of tracks from their brilliant debut 'Brothers in Arms' EP, thankfully including my favorite track from that release, the awesome 'Head-Heavy'. To their credit the band didn't let the small crowd impact on their performance, and they played to 50 people with the same energy and intensity they had played to 4000 at Download.

Alongside these older tracks the band also introduced some new songs, which showed how well Godsized are developing as songwriters. The new tracks are still super heavy but have some more melodic elements, without losing their edge. if 'The Bounty Hunter' and 'Bleeding on the inside' are anything to go by the future for this band is incredibly bright and the forthcoming 'The Phoney Tough and The Crazy Brave' EP will be something a bit special.

I was at the gig with the guys from ThisIsNotAScene.com and after Godsized finished their all too brief set we spoke in hushed tones words we would never have expected.....

Was this the best gig we'd seen this year ???

There have been murmurs in the ether about two of Britain's best bands, Furyon and Godsized, doing some gigs together. If that happens you HAVE to go. That could just be the best rock concert ever....
